Dingle Belle; EXCLUSIVE WHY I'M SO HAPPY WITH HOW DONNA'S GROWN UP ..SAYS EMMERDALE BEAUTY VERITY RUSHWORTH.(News)

Byline: By ANTONIA HOYLE

SEXY soap babe Verity Rushworth was a gawky 12-year-old with braces on her teeth when she first arrived in Emmerdale.

Today, nine years on, she's a curvy pin-up and this week millions of viewers will see her most explosive storyline yet.

Verity - who plays Donna Windsor Dingle - has come a long way since 1998 when she was thrust into living rooms around Britain.

She giggles: "When I see pictures of me from back then on the internet with braces and a bob, I just want to get them off. It's so embarrassing."

Back then, she had to face bullying from jealous classmates at school. It was, she admits, tough juggling her two very different lives.

But now, the pretty 21-year-old can look back on nearly a decade of life playing Donna, who went on to marry Marlon Dingle, in the ITV soap.

"There is a part of me that regrets growing up so publicly," she says.

"I had no control over the way I looked. All the girls at school were dying their hair, getting piercings and putting make-up on, but I couldn't do anything like that."

Not only that, her overnight success made her the victim of sniping.

"I got a bit bullied at first," she says. "Some of the girls would say, 'Ooh, you think you're it now, don't you?' or 'Am I bovvered?'

"Why do girls have to be like that? It did upset me at first, but they soon got bored. I didn't change or go on about my job, so they got bored."

Highlights of her time on Emmerdale so far include coping with the murder of her dad, Vic, when he was killed by Billy Hopwood as he burgled the post office on Christmas Day in 1998.

And tomorrow night an explosive storyline sees Verity take centre stage again. Desperate to save Dingle cousin Lilith's kids from a childhood in care, Donna and dippy Marlon (played by Mark Charnock) hatch an escape plan.

To smuggle them out of social services' clutches, they sneak them from the Woolpack and away to a B&B.

"The older I get, the more meaty and juicy my storylines become," says Verity with relish, whose bubbly personality she admits is nothing like her alter-ego's bolshy one.

For her 21st birthday in August, she had a big party at the Park Plaza in Leeds with 350 people.

Verity muses: "I'm looking forward to my 20s. It hardly feels like two minutes since I was under 16 and not allowed to go out without a chaperone.

"All the children in the cast have to have one. It was such a drag. I'd be sat in the corner, too shy to talk, watching the older girls like Sheree Murphy, Lisa Riley and Adele Silva going out."

Although she can now go out whenever she wants, she doesn't go overboard. "I'm a real lightweight," she laughs. "Three vodka lime-andlemonades and I'm tipsy, dancing around doing cartwheels. I'm a cheap date!"

VERITY adds, more seriously, when asked if she's ever been tempted to go off the rails: "My mum would kill me if I did drugs. I think it's all to do with the way you've been brought up.

"I was so into my drama, and too busy going to classes to hang out on the street or get into trouble."

With her blossoming confidence comes a hunky new boyfriend in the form of Leeds Rhinos rugby league player Lee Smith. Both from Leeds, they met just over a year ago and are even spending Christmas morning together.

"It's not serious, I don't take anything too seriously," she chuckles. "He's 20, so I've got myself a toyboy! Luckily, he's really laid-back and not phased by my job. He has to sign autographs too, so he knows what it's like. Do I love him? Ooh, I can't answer that!"

She doesn't miss having to fend off advances from other men either. "Lads come up to me in bars ask me if I'm Donna," she says. "They say their mates bet them a fiver that they can't get my mobile. I give them a false number so they win the bet and I don't hear from them again."

She's doubly recognisable when she's out with her mates and co-stars, Sammy Winward, who plays Katie Sugden, and Adele Silva, who plays Kelly Windsor.

"No one says anything nasty," she says. "I think it's because we're young girls. If we were big bruisers we'd get more hassle. I was out with Adele in London this weekend actually.

"She's as daft as me - we were doing cha cha chas and rumbas and spinning around the dance floor." But Verity insists there's no competition between the girls.

"We're all so different looks-wise and in personality," she says. "Sammy is gorgeous, blonde and blue-eyed and I'm more the ditzy tomboy." She says ex-Emmerdale member Patsy Kensit - who played superbitch Sadie King - was "the life and soul of the cast" and is also great friends with the girls from Corrie.

She says: "I'm on Soapstar Superstar with Jane Danson (Leanne Battersby) and Tupele Dorgu (Kelly Crabtree) in 2007.

"We have a laugh together." If she leaves the soap Verity would like to get into theatre. "I'd love to put my musical and theatre training to use on a West End show," she says.

"It would be so different and give me a buzz. I'd love to go to Hollywood and do films too, but the chances of that," she smiles,

With less than a week to Christmas, she's busy buying presents for friends and family.

"I've got Adele's. I can't say what it is, but it's pink," she says. "I've bought Sammy and Lucy (Pargeter's) babies some cute stuff too." And what about Lee?

"We've agreed on a low budget because we've been on some lovely holidays this year, and I've just bought a house and am skint.

"I'll probably get him some soot and a tangerine!"

My mum would kill me if I did drugs - it's how you're brought up

Man charged with luring teen girl.(METROPOLITAN)

Byline: THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Jeffrey Nichols, the man accused of luring a Richmond teenager into meeting him and running away, was arrested yesterday.

Mr. Nichols, 57, was seen sitting in his parked car by an anonymous tipster in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Henrico County.

"Henrico police officers arrested him, and he was immediately turned over to Richmond police," said Kirsten Nelson, a spokeswoman for the Richmond Police Department, which has been looking for Mr. Nichols for more than a month.

Monica Sharp, 17, whom Mr. Nichols met over the Internet, returned home Monday unharmed and of her own free will. Police have questioned the teen and will not press charges.

Monica disappeared from her Richmond home Sept. 18 while taking her dog for a walk. Her dog returned home without her the next day.

"It's always been our assumption that she went willingly," Miss Nelson said.

Police think Mr. Nichols brought Monica home.

Mr. Nichols has been charged with use of a communications system to facilitate certain offenses involving children, which is a felony.

Monica went missing two weeks after Virginia Commonwealth University student Taylor Marie Behl, also 17, disappeared. Miss Behl's remains, described as mostly skeletal, were found behind an abandoned farmhouse in Mathews County, Va., on Oct. 5, a month after she vanished.

Benjamin Fawley, 38, an amateur photographer who was known to have had sexual relations with Miss Behl, is suspected in the case. He is being held by Richmond police on unrelated child pornography and gun charges and has not been charged in Miss Behl's death. A cause of death has not been released.

DePaul boards up win; Simmons scores 35, keys rebounding effort.

Byline: Skip Myslenski

CHICAGO _ The face of DePaul coach Pat Kennedy was as red as Santa's suit, and it had nothing to do with with the holiday season. It had, instead, everything to do with the way his Blue Demons suddenly were playing.

There were 4 minutes 33 seconds left in Saturday's matinee with Northern Illinois at the Allstate Arena, and they were well on their way to an easy 78-67 victory over the Huskies (1-7). But in the previous three minutes, they had performed with neither poise nor discipline and had watched their 15-point lead slip to eight.

Kennedy called a 30-second timeout and carried on so excitedly in the huddle that his face turned that color so seasonably appropriate.

"When you have a big lead, sometimes you get too relaxed," Demons forward Bobby Simmons said. "A few times down the court, we tried to make plays that weren't really there, and they scored and we didn't. He told us to get organized."

"In games of this nature, you want to be mature," Kennedy said. "You get up 15. That's a very solid effort. OK. Now close it out with maturity and let's get to the locker room. I wasn't seeing that."

Kennedy has, since the season began, harped on the need for his team to play with more consistency. It just wasn't doing that. The other point he had driven home was the need to hit the boards more aggressively, which it hadn't done while getting outrebounded in the previous five outings.

"He told us if we got outrebounded again, we'd have to come in and run (Sunday morning)," Simmons said.

Kennedy confirmed that: "I really was going to make them run."

How much?

"I don't know. It depends on how badly we were outrebounded."

That was one threat the Demons did respond to. They simply swarmed all over the smaller Huskies down low. They collected 56 total rebounds to Northern's 29, 24 offensive rebounds to Northern's seven, and in the first half alone, they picked up a remarkable 25 second-chance points. They finished with 27.

Simmons led the Demons (7-4) with a career-high 35 points and a season-high 15 rebounds (seven offensive). Northern forward Leon Rodgers answered with 23 points, but the game was truly settled by DePaul's collective rebounding effort.

Freshman forward Andre Brown had 11 rebounds (five offensive), and Williams and Steve Hunter had nine each. All afternoon, the Demons treated any missed shot as if it were just part of an old tip drill.

"It was frustrating," said Northern coach Andy Greer, in his first game as head coach. "I thought defensively, for the most part, we did heck of a job today except for finishing it with the defensive rebounding."

"It was very frustrating," echoed Rodgers. "We got killed on the boards. At least in the second half we gave a better effort. But by then it was too late. The last five minutes of the first half, they really pounded us."

The Huskies were down only six entering those five minutes, but then came the telling sequence that put this one away for the Demons: Hunter on an offensive rebound and Simmons on the same; Simmons on another offensive rebound and guard Imari Sawyer on a layup off a steal; Hunter on a tip and Simmons on an offensive rebound plus a foul shot he converted. With that, the Demons went on to build their lead to 14 points by halftime, and then they nursed that lead along except for that 3-minute stretch that so agitated Kennedy.

"I was very disappointed with that," Kennedy said. "We've been working hard on it in practice. And we're going to work on it harder."

SI, CINEMA THEATER FINDS SUCCESS SHOWING FIRST-RUN SPANISH FILMS.(Business)

Byline: Linda Black, Special To The News

The metro area's only first-run movie theater aimed at Spanish-speaking audiences has been so successful that its owners have spent thousands of dollars sprucing it up.

The Cinema Latino Aurora 8 at Peoria Street and East Seventh Avenue has undergone an extensive refurbishing - everything from new signs to new equipment, said David Mejias, president of Sonora Entertainment Group, the Broomfield-based company that owns the theater.

Improvements include upgraded sound systems, new projectors, new carpeting and wall treatments, improved lighting in the concession area and remodeled bathrooms.

The overhaul was in response to the theater's growing success, Mejias said.

"We saw there was a positive trend in attendance," he said. "Seeing that growth opportunity in the Aurora area, we saw it was necessary to be proactive and address those (improvement) needs."

Mejias declined to reveal attendance figures or how much the company invested in the improvements. He would say, however, that the remodeling project cost a "few hundred thousand."

But the theater's success comes as no surprise when you consider that the rapidly growing Hispanic and Latino population makes up 17.1 percent of the state's population, according to the 2000 census.

It increased from 424,302 in 1990 to 735,601 in 2000, according to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau compiled by the Denver Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

The idea for a theater that shows first-run movies dubbed or subtitled in Spanish was spawned two years ago when company founder Jared Polis, a local entrepreneur, wanted to take friends from Mexico to the movies.

"I was very surprised to find there weren't any Spanish-speaking theaters," he said. "So I looked into it and found no first-run Spanish speaking theaters anywhere in the United States."

And Polis is someone who recognizes a business opportunity when he sees it. He founded Boulder-based BlueMountain.com, a successful Internet offshoot of his parent's greeting card company, which he sold in 1999 to Excite@Home for a reported $780 million. He was named an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2000. And in April, Fortune magazine named Polis one of America's 40 Richest Under 40.

Polis formed Sonora Entertainment Group in 2001 and signed on Mejias, a New Jersey native who went to Princeton University with Polis. After putting in a stint at a Chicago nonprofit, Mejias went to work with Polis at BlueMountain.com.

The fledgling company went in search of a theater in the metro area and found the Aurora multiplex, which was operating as a $1 cinema, that was for sale, Mejias said. Polis bought it, and a new concept was born.

Mejias said the theater is targeting Spanish-speaking and bilingual audiences. Initially, the greatest challenge was securing first-run movies from the studios that were dubbed or subtitled, he said.

"They traditionally haven't had any strong players in this area," Mejias said. "So it took awhile to get films that were subtitled or dubbed."

But, he added, because of piracy concerns, the movie studios are moving toward releasing first-run films domestically and internationally at the same time.

For instance, The Matrix: Revolutions was released here and abroad at the same time.

In addition to subtitled and dubbed films, the theater shows first-run Spanish-language films.

To make the theater more appealing to its target audience, it also provides such things as Latin music, candies from Mexico and Central America, and hot sauce for the popcorn. All employees are bilingual.

It also caters to the audience's taste in movies, which tends toward action and family films as well as "culturally relevant" movies, such as Frieda, Mejias said. "Definitely there are certain types of films that resonate with our audience," he added.

The Aurora venture has been so successful that the company has expanded its theater base to Fort Worth, Texas; and Phoenix. And he said the company continues to "look opportunistically" at Spanish-speaking markets across the country.

Driver pleads not guilty in deadly Va. bus crash

BOWLING GREEN, Va. (AP) — The driver of an interstate bus that crashed in Virginia, killing four passengers and injuring dozens more, pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter on Wednesday.

Kin Yiu Cheung, 37, of New York entered the plea after a grand jury confirmed he would face four felony counts of involuntary manslaughter. A trial by judge was scheduled for Sept. 12.

Court records show Cheung acknowledged to police that he fell asleep at the wheel when the low-fare Sky Express bus from Greensboro, N.C., to New York City swerved off Interstate 95 about 30 miles north of Richmond, hit an embankment and overturned with 60 people aboard May 31.

"Under the law, this has to be an intentional disregard, reckless disregard, for human life," defense attorney Murray Janus told reporters after the circuit court hearing in Virginia's Caroline County. "My client is not guilty of that."

"It was a terrible accident and a tragedy, no question about that," he said.

A document obtained by The Associated Press shows Cheung's attorneys are asking a judge to suppress any statements he made, claiming he was denied access to counsel and wasn't properly advised of his rights. Janus would not comment on the motion after the hearing.

Prosecutor Tony Spencer was unavailable for comment because he was still in court and did not return a phone message seeking comment.

Cheung's wife, Qun Lin, attended the hearing along with their two children, ages 5 and 7. They planned to visit Cheung in jail Thursday. She said through an interpreter that the charges were not fair because the crash was an accident.

"It wasn't his fault," she said. "Me and my husband both feel really sorry."

If convicted, Cheung faces up to 10 years in prison for each felony count, one for each of the women killed in the early morning crash. Cheung, who is being held without bond at a regional jail, also is charged with misdemeanor reckless driving.

Virginia State Police have identified those killed in the crash as Karen Blyden-Decastro, 46, of Cambria Heights, N.Y.; Sie Giok Giang, 63, of Philadelphia; Josefa Torres, 78, of Jamaica, N.Y.; and Denny Estefany Martinez, 25, of Jersey City, N.J.

Transportation Department officials were in the process of shutting down the company at the time of the crash, but had given the Charlotte, N.C.-based company an extra 10 days to appeal an unsatisfactory safety rating.

A timeline released by the department indicated that without the extension, Sky Express would have ceased operations the weekend before the crash. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has directed the department to stop extending appeals periods for operators found to be unsafe.

Following the crash, federal officials shut down the bus line and then issued a cease-and-desist order against the company after finding it was trying to sell tickets under other names.

Sky Express is part of an industry of inexpensive buses that travel the East Coast offering cheap fares, convenient routes and, in some cases, free wireless Internet. The industry is in the fifth year of a boom, but a string of deadly accidents has prompted calls for tougher federal regulation.

According to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration records, Sky Express buses have been involved in four crashes with an injury or fatality — it didn't specify which — during the two-year period that ended May 20. The company also has been cited for 46 violations of drivers being fatigued over that same period, ranking it worse than 86 percent of commercial motor carriers.

CCID Consulting: China's IT Industry in Coming Five Years.

The traditional industries' experience in informatization may not apply to the emerging industries; the informatization of those emerging strategic industries requires more than IT system integration and industrial software application

BEIJING -- The new-generation information technology is recognized as a pillar industry among China's emerging strategic industries. Meanwhile, it also ranked high among the seven emerging strategic industries in the gazette of the Fifth Plenum of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in Oct. 2010. Thus the new-generation information technology industry has gained an important position during the period of the 12th Five-Year Plan.

The new-generation information technology industry is closely connected with the IT industry, and they are complementary to each other. It is because the new-generation information technology industry mainly consists of the next generation communications network, Internet of things, cloud computing, tri-networks convergence, new display devices, high-performance IC, high-end software and server, which cover the key technologies and major markets of the IT industry in the fields of computer technology, communications technology and sensor technology. While new technical breakthroughs continue to meet the increasing market demand, new demand also continues to stimulate innovations of related technologies. It is observed that the new-generation information technology is guiding the development of the IT industry, serving as an important breakthrough point of industrial upgrade and a continuous drive for the prosperity of the IT industry.

Therefore, the new-generation information technology's high-speed development has brought opportunities to the IT industry. With the launch of supportive government policies and measures, China's electronic information industry will face a favorable policy environment, and the industry is about to enter another fast-growing five, and even ten years.

In the face of the future leap of the emerging strategic industries, the IT industry is obliged to take the following measures. Firstly, the IT industry should have a sound understanding of the policy trends and comply with the state's industrial guidance to develop related information technologies in the fields of energy-saving and environmental protection, new energy and new materials. With regard to the industrial layout, the IT industry should coordinate with the development of the emerging strategic industries, with a focus on meeting its urgent demand. Secondly, enterprises of the IT industry should be able to identify the market demand. New enterprises and new demand are set to arise with the great development of the emerging strategic industries. Therefore, the IT enterprises will have to pay close attention to the development of the emerging strategic industries in order to provide supporting products and services for their informatization. Thirdly, the IT industry should enhance its independent innovation capabilities and try to achieve breakthroughs in key fields and technologies. The development of China's emerging strategic industries is not supposed to heavily depend on the introduction of foreign technologies for informatization supports, so China's IT industry should have the courage to take on this mission. At present, the independent innovations of the IT industry still faces many problems, such as the enterprises' weak innovation capabilities, lack of core technologies, an incomplete policy and regulation system to facilitate the market access of new technologies and products, and poor supports for innovative start-ups in terms of investment, financing and fiscal policies and mechanisms.

The IT enterprises should play a dominant role in accelerating the convergence of industrialization and informatization in new emerging industries, helping emerging strategic industrial companies acquire the informatization tools and achieve green and sustainable development. To be specific, the IT enterprises should pay close attention to the development trends of emerging strategic industries, promptly identify the IT application demand of the emerging strategic industries, track the development of cloud computing, Internet of things, other new technology and application fields, and meet the expanding informatization demand of the emerging strategic industries with innovative technologies, products and services.

It should be noted that, the IT enterprises will face more challenges when providing informatization services for the new emerging industries compared to that for the traditional industries. The emerging strategic industries consider significant technology breakthroughs and significant development demand as the fundamentals, which means that the informatization of emerging strategic industries will be bound with new industries, new markets, new enterprises, new technologies and new business processes. The traditional industries' experience in informatization may not apply to the emerging industries. The informatization of those emerging strategic industries requires more than IT system integration and industrial software application.
