NSW: Man charged with attempted murder over stabbing

Eds: Updates with charge details for first assault, involving taxi driver

SYDNEY, April 11 AAP - Four people have been admitted to hospital with serious injuries
and one man has been charged with attempted murder after a night of violence across Sydney.

The victims include a 21-year-old man who is in critical condition on life support
after being stabbed in the head during an alleged altercation with a taxi driver in Sydney's
inner west.

Police said the man had an argument with a taxi driver on the City West Link, between
The Crescent in Annandale, and Balmain Road, Leichhardt, about 11.25pm (AEST) yesterday.

Detectives have arrested and charged a 45-year-old man with attempted murder and assault.

He was refused bail and will appear in Parramatta Local Court today.

Police were also investigating a serious assault at Appin, southwest of the city, which
left a teenager in a critical condition.

About 3.45am (AEST), an altercation involving a number of people broke out in Rixon
Street, Appin, and a 16-year-old male sustained serious injuries.

He was in a critical but stable condition in Liverpool Hospital.

A 27-year-old man was also injured and was in a stable condition in Campbelltown Hospital.

A crime scene was established and inquiries were continuing.

Meanwhile, another man was admitted to hospital overnight after receiving multiple
stab wounds to his head and body during a fight at a western Sydney home.

Police said two men aged in their 30s were visiting a friend in Auburn when another
two men pulled up in a car and entered the house about 9.30pm (AEST).

An argument followed, and a 31-year-old man was stabbed.

He was taken by ambulance to Westmead Hospital and remains in a serious condition today.

Flemington Police were investigating whether the altercation at the Auburn home was
linked to an argument between a group of four men at a nearby hotel earlier in the evening.

Finally, police are appealing to a man injured in a street fight in central Sydney
to contact them.

The victim and his girlfriend were walking along Park Street, heading towards Kings
Cross, between midnight and 1am (AEST) today when another man began arguing with them.

The men got into a fight and the victim, whose mobile phone was stolen, was thought
to have been seriously injured.

However, a check of hospitals in the area failed to locate either the injured man or
his girlfriend.
